first_imgDiego Maradona has doubts about reports that Argentina players picked the team instead of Jorge Sampaoli at the World Cup.After Argentina’s 3-0 defeat to Croatia, there were reports that Sampaoli would relinquish his selection responsibilities for the crunch clash against Nigeria, with his players wanting him changed and replaced with general manager Jorge Burruchaga. The Argentina’s legend described such reports as would have been outrageous and even went further to says that’s not possible.Maradona was an exuberant attendee in St Petersburg and does not believe the players are in charge of picking the line-up.“I don’t believe that’s possible. If that happened, it’s better not to have a coach,” he told Marca via Goal.“I think it’s outrageous, anyway. first_imgWILMINGTON, MA — At last week’s Board of Selectmen Meeting, Wilmington Town Manager Jeff Hull provided residents with an update on the Butters Row Bridge Replacement project.“The project has been delayed because flagmen were not available to permit survey work to be completed,” Hull wrote in a memo to the board. “There is a statewide flagman shortage and many Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) projects involving railroads have experienced the same issues.”Flagmen were recently made available. As a result, a field survey was able to be completed by Green International Affiliates, the engineering firm hired by MassDOT to complete the bridge design. Green International Affiliates was the same firm that designed the nearby Yentile Farm Recreational Facility.“Green International will next perform conceptual/preliminary design and obtain approvals for the bridge concept and roadway alignment from various MassDOT departments,” noted Hull. “Green anticipates completing preliminary design sometime next year.”Green International anticipates coming in front of the Board of Selectmen a meeting in mid-to-late fall of 2019 so Selectmen and the public can review and comment on the preliminary design.“The plan is to coordinate the Butters Row Bridge work with work on the bridge near Town Park on Route 38, but details have not been discussed because construction of both bridges are still a few years ago,” added Hull. “Currently MassDOT’s schedule calls for the Butters Row Bridge project to be advertised in 2021, but that date is subject to change.”The new Butters Row bridge will feature two lanes with sidewalks.Like Wilmington Apple on Facebook. first_imgElections run on local county officials. The DHS is focusing its efforts on county officials to secure the vote in 2020. Jahi Chikwendiu/The Washington Post via Getty Images As special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation on Russian hacking and collusion with the Trump campaign ends, the Department of Homeland Security is gearing up to prevent a repeat for the 2020 US presidential election. The federal agency, which formed the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency last November, said that it’s “doubling down” on its efforts, calling election security for 2020 a top priority. It hopes to do that by focusing on local election officials, Matt Masterson, a DHS senior adviser on election security, said in an interview with CNET. The emphasis on local represents a new tact as the DHS tries to shut down foreign interference in the US elections. While the agency worked with all 50 states during the 2018 midterm elections, security experts said the outreach needs to zoom in on a county level. There are about 8,800 county election officials across the US, and they are the people responsible for your voting machines, your polling place’s security and handling vote auditing. “It may actually be the most important part of the entire infrastructure, these local county officials,” said Jake Braun, executive director of the University of Chicago’s Cyber Policy Initiative and co-founder of the Defcon Voting Machine Hacking Village. Before the election in 2016, the DHS didn’t have an established network of election officials to work with on security issues. It wasn’t until hacking threats became a national concern during the last presidential election that the DHS ramped up its efforts. A real threatUS Attorney General William Barr’s summary of Mueller’s report stated that up to 26 Russian nationals were behind hacking efforts and disinformation campaigns during the 2016 presidential election. These cyberattacks included hacks against the Democratic National Committee and access to voter registration databases.  Since then, the DHS has provided state election officials with resources like penetration testing, weekly reports on vulnerabilities and sensors that could detect hacking attempts. Most of that outreach has been for high-level election officials in each state, but the DHS is now focusing on individual counties.”We’ve done a good job reaching them, but we have a lot of area for growth there,” Masterson said. To do that, the DHS hired election security experts like Noah Praetz, the former director of elections in Cook County, Illinois. He’s seen what county officials needed during the 2018 elections and has been addressing the DHS’s gap with local election security since February. Braun said Praetz has been traveling to meet with local election officials and addressing security concerns and explaining how the DHS can help. Social disinformation awarenessThe DHS is also hoping to train local election officials to help counter disinformation from social media. That was one of the agency’s biggest concerns on Election Day in 2018, that people would spread lies on Facebook and Twitter to dissuade people from voting. Masterson said the DHS is connecting social media companies with local election officials to help them identify disinformation online and prevent it from spreading. A Twitter spokesperson pointed at its efforts for the 2018 midterm elections, and said it will continue those efforts for the 2020 election. Facebook said it worked closely with the DHS in 2018 and intends to continue working with local election officials in 2020.The social media giant said it set up a way for local election officials to contact Facebook directly if they see disinformation spreading.”It really is about empowering the trusted messengers in that community to talk with the voters,” Masterson said. “The county officials are directly engaged in the process, which is really important.” Resources lackingDespite the hyperlocal outreach, both the DHS and local election officials are still challenged by a lack of resources. Masterson said the agency hopes to have 100 percent auditable systems by 2020, but a major roadblock is funding. In 2018, Congress set aside $380 million for election security funds, which Masterson said was an “important first step” but not nearly enough to upgrade voting systems across the US. “There’s so many systems that support elections that need investments and upgrades,” Masterson said. “Money remains a challenge, resources remain a challenge.”Lawmakers have proposed legislation that would direct $1.5 billion to county election officials to buy new voting technology. The For the People Act passed in the House but hasn’t come up for a vote in the Senate. “It’s great to do an assessment and know where your vulnerabilities are, it’s another to actually fix them,” Braun said. “Congress has to pass this bill or no one is actually going to be able to implement the mitigation program.” States also aren’t required to spend money on election security — as it’s currently a voluntary standard. Last June, a group of lawmakers introduced the Protecting American Votes and Elections Act, which would require paper ballots and audits on federal elections.”The cybersecurity experts are clear: the most secure and cost-effective method of voting is hand-marked paper ballots,” said Sen. Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon and one of the lawmakers behind the bill. “Anything else creates unnecessary risk while gouging taxpayers in order to enrich politically-connected voting machine manufacturers.” But until it’s mandatory, local counties aren’t working with much funding, and the federal agency wants to make sure that every cent is wisely spent. The DHS has been working to help county election officials, advising them last June on how to spend the $380 million election security funds.”We are so focused on doing anything we can to support that,” Masterson said. “It’s not just based on a ‘wouldn’t-it-be-nice,’ it’s informed by risks we’ve seen out in the field.” Politics Security Tags 0center_img Share your voice Post a commentlast_img read more

first_imgDonald Trump. File photoStudents galvanized by the deadly mass shooting at a Florida high school confronted lawmakers on Wednesday with demands to restrict sales of assault rifles, while president Donald Trump suggested arming teachers as a way to stop more US rampages. The unprecedented lobbying effort by groups of teenagers and parents at the White House and at the Florida statehouse in Tallahassee played out as fellow students staged classroom walkouts and rallies in cities across the country.Trump held an emotional, hour-long meeting with students who survived the Florida shooting and a parent whose child did not. He said arming teachers and other school staff could help prevent future mass shootings, voicing support for an idea backed by the powerful National Rifle Association gun lobby. The Republican president, who has championed gun rights and was endorsed by the NRA during the 2016 campaign, said he would move quickly to tighten background checks for gun buyers and would consider raising the age for buying certain types of guns. The attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and educators were killed on Feb. 14 in the second-deadliest shooting at a US public school, has revived the long-running US debate over gun rights.Investigators said the assault was carried out by 19-year-old former Stoneman Douglas student Nikolas Cruz, who purchased an AR-15-style assault weapon nearly a year ago.“Nikolas Cruz was able to purchase an assault rifle before he was able to buy a beer,” said Stoneman Douglas student Laurenzo Prado, referring to a Florida law that allows people as young as 18 to buy assault weapons.“The laws of the country have failed,” he told reporters at the Florida state capital.Lawmakers in Tallahassee said they would consider raising the age limit to 21, the same standard for handguns and alcohol, although the state Senate opted on Wednesday not to take up a gun control measure. The US Constitution protects the right of Americans to bear arms, a measure fiercely defended by Republicans. However, Trump has come under pressure to act.Trump spoke at length during the televised White House “listening session”, attended by students, parents and people affected by other US school shootings, about how armed teachers and security guards could frighten off potential shooters and prevent more deaths.“If you had a teacher … who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly,” he said, while acknowledging the proposal was controversial. Some of the meeting participants indicated support. Others were opposed.Mark Barden, whose son was killed in the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, said his wife, Jackie, a teacher “will tell you that school teachers have more than enough responsibilities right now than to have to have the awesome responsibility of lethal force to take a life.”‘WEAPON OF WAR’A task force backed by the NRA recommended more armed guards and teachers in schools after the Sandy Hook shooting.Trump listened intently to ideas from about 40 people, including those from six students who survived the Florida shooting.“I don’t understand why I could still go in a store and buy a weapon of war,” said Sam Zeif, 18, sobbing after he described texting his family members during the attack. “Let’s never let this happen again, please, please.”Trump sat in the middle of a semi-circle in the White House State Dining Room. Photographers captured images of his handwritten note card with questions and responses such as: “What would you most want me to know about your experience?” and “I hear you.”In Tallahassee, students demanded that lawmakers restrict sales of assault rifles. Some wore T-shirts and carried signs reading: “We call BS,” one of the slogans of the movement started by the survivors.Trump also said he was open to looking at age limits, among other measures, and lamented the closure of many mental institutions that helped assess violent people.“There’s no … middle ground of having that institution where you had trained people that could handle it and do something about it,” Trump said.‘PATHETICALLY WEAK’Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter was killed at Stoneman Douglas, told Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida at a town hall program televised on CNN on Wednesday night his comments and those of the president’s in the past week had been “pathetically weak.”Rubio, under fire for saying the problems could not be solved by gun laws alone, said he would support a law that would prevent 18-year-olds from buying a rifle as well as a ban on “bump stocks,” an accessory that enables a rifle to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.Ashley Kurth, a Republican teacher who protected more than 60 people in her classroom, questioned Rubio about Trump’s proposal to arm teachers.“Am I supposed to get extra training now to serve and protect? … Am I supposed to get a Kevlar vest? Am I supposed to strap it (the gun) to my leg or put it in my desk?”Rubio responded that the idea of arming teacher was wrong.NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch told the crowd of several thousand people the gun lobby wanted to prevent people with mental illness that make them a danger to themselves and others from getting firearms, and that authorities needed to do a better job of following up on warning signs.“I don’t believe that this insane monster should have ever been able to obtain a firearm. This individual was nuts,” she said of the suspected school shooter.Trump directed the Justice Department on Tuesday to work on a regulation that would effectively ban bump stocks.Last October, a retired real estate investor used multiple assault rifles equipped with bump stocks to kill 58 people at a Las Vegas outdoor concert, the deadliest attack by a single gunman in U.S. history. Bump stocks have not played a prominent role in other recent U.S. mass shootings. The NRA opposes an outright ban on bump stocks but has said it would be open to restrictions on them.last_img read more

(One example: You can’t fast-forward or skip back when watching the full-length featured episodes.)
