All yearly awards are presented by Ready Nutrition.Alberto’s Player of the Year honor marks the second of her career after claiming the award last season. To go along with the accolade, the junior is a First Team All-Conference selection after tying for third place with a 218 at the 2019 Southland Women’s Golf Championship. Alberto led the Southland with a 72.03 scoring average for the season and recorded four first-place individual finishes out of 11 tournament appearances.Alongside Alberto is fellow Bearkat Kenlie Barrett who is the 2018-19 Freshman of the Year. Barrett, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, cemented a spot on the all-conference first team after winning the Southland Conference Championship. Barrett became the first Sam Houston State freshman to win the women’s golf title.Sam Houston State head coach Brandt Kieschnick is the Southland Coach of the Year after leading his team to three tournament victories, including a Southland Conference championship in Magnolia, Texas. Kieschnick and his Bearkat squad will resume their postseason play at the Norman Regional of the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship Monday, May 6-8, at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.Capturing the Newcomer of the Year honor is Lamar sophomore Carson Racich. In her first season with the Cardinals, Racich recorded a 78.35 scoring average throughout the season with a low round of 72. The Loves Park, Ill., product helped her team to a fourth-place finish at the Southland Championship.SHSU leads the all-conference rosters with three selections in total, two on the first team. Joining Barrett on the first team, Alberto makes her way onto the squad for the third time in her career. Senior Jenna Phillips earns her second all-conference nod with a spot on the second team.Houston Baptist’s Kaity Cummings, first team, and Lexi Brooks, second team, are each claiming the fourth all-conference bids of their careers. Cummings tied for third overall at the Southland Championship, while Brooks took sixth-place honors.Central Arkansas’ Emma Svensson earns first-team honors after boosting her team to a late surge at the Southland Championship that resulted in a second-place team finish for the Bears. Her play at the conference tournament was enough to tie her for third place individually, following a 71 in the final round. Svensson’s honor gives her four all-conference awards throughout her collegiate career with the Bears.Lamar’s Elodie Chapelet rounds out the 2019 first team all-conference honorees, making her way onto the squad for the third time in her collegiate career. The senior tied for seventh at the Southland Championship and completed regular season play ranked second in the conference with a 44-1 record against conference opponents.Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Autumn Bynum, Stephen F. Austin’s Erica Lautensack and McNeese’s Riley Isaac round out the Southland’s all-conference selections, all with second team nods.All-Conference teams and individual superlatives are voted on by each league school’s head coach and sports information director.
