first_imgDonal Cullen, an independent candidate for the Letterkenny-Milford electoral area, has expressed his anger that constituents who find themselves out of the country aren’t entitled to cast their vote and have their say in the local and European elections. Cullen told Donegal Daily, “One of the many issues I have encountered during my election campaign canvass, is the discrimination against members of the public who will be on holiday on the day of the Local and European Elections.“As an Independent Community Candidate contesting the forthcoming local election in the Milford/Letterkenny Area, I just find it ridiculous that members of the public who are out of the country on holiday on the day of the election are not entitled to cast their vote. Cullen added, “In essence what this message means is if your out of the country on holiday your vote doesn’t count, your opinion isn’t important!“The reality of the situation is that you have no say in what may happen in your community over the next five years.Cullen concluded by saying, “I am now calling on the Department of Environment and Local Government to review this situation with a view to introducing a system where votes can be cast by people prior to going on holiday.“Other jurisdictions have a system where votes can be cast by means of a proxy vote. “Every citizen of this state has the constitutional right to cast a vote.ELECTION 2014: CULLEN – “CONSTITUENTS NOT IN IRELAND SHOULD BE ENTITLED TO VOTE” was last modified: May 21st, 2014 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Donal CullenElection 2014:newsPoliticslast_img read more
